TANK, 2019

Jeremy Wafer's sculpture features a small corrugated water tank, painted black and elevated on metal legs. Familiar yet out of place, the work evokes both the ordinary and the uncanny. The tank, salvaged from his son’s home, resonates with layers of personal and collective memory. Its form recalls industrial structures, Becher-inspired photography, and functional rainwater tanks. The piece draws from Wafer's past works and experiences, including a childhood memory of sensing the dark mass of water inside a rainwater tank outside their kitchen by pressing his cheek against the cool metal. This juxtaposition of the mundane and the evocative explores themes of nostalgia, utility, and the interplay between object and memory.
