Adam Birch

English oak

SACRUM, 2024

Carved from a single monumental piece of English oak, Sacrum highlights the dexterity and skill of Cape Town-based sculptor, Adam Birch. Renowned for his works featuring tree forks—the strongest and most unpredictable part of a tree’s anatomy—Birch transforms this discarded material into sleek, functional forms. Using a chainsaw, he meticulously refines the grain, curves, and hollows without assemblage or joinery, creating pieces that accommodate seated bodies. Beyond their elegant simplicity, Birch’s works possess a metaphysical quality, repurposing the tree’s essence into objects of utility and function, offering a poetic reflection on transformation and resilience.
