Art Mile English Oak (Quercus robur), 2025
Ilana Maree & Hanlé Hill
Wheat Paste and Cartridge Paper
Drawing on nature as an artform, this contact print made by printmaker, Ilana Maree, and artist and cultural specialist, Hanlé Hill, reveals the life span of one of the oldest oak trees in Stellenbosch. In collaboration with local ecologist, David Pepler, and cultural historian, Matilda Burden, the tree’s age before it fell is estimated to be 100 to 150 years old.
This English Oak’s life came to an end during the catastrophic storm in April, 2024. Over time, this artwork will reveal moments of this historical tree’s life through artistic interpretations thereof, as well as historical information of how its species arrived in Stellenbosch.
