Sam Nhlengethwa

Sam Nhlengethwa (b. 1955, Payneville, Springs) is a renowned South African artist whose work explores the sociopolitical history and everyday life of his country. Working across painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture, he captures themes such as street life, jazz, interiors, and fashion.

His art often highlights social issues, including environmental justice, as seen in Heading for Delivery (2016), which reflects on waste pickers’ role in climate change mitigation. A founder of the Bag Factory, Nhlengethwa has exhibited globally, including at the Venice and Havana Biennales, and won the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year award (1994). His work is housed in major collections, cementing his legacy in contemporary African art.
